18 Months!

Little miss Claire turned 18 months on Christmas!
I cannot believe how much she has grown and changed in the past 6 months. I feel like we were just having her first birthday party!

Pregnant with number 2 009

Height: 2 feet 11.75 inches (off the chart)
Weight: 25 lbs 5 oz (65th percentile)
We have a tall, skinny little girl! I was a little worried about her weight being low but the doctor said she isn't concerned at all. Claire also did really well on her developmental test and the doctor said she is well above where she would expect an 18 month old to be. Just had to be a bragging mama ;) The doctor also said she thought I could start potty training Claire if I wanted to, but I don't think I have the energy to do that right now, and Claire doesn't seem overly interested so I don't want to push anything.

Since it's been 6 months since her last update (oops!), I'll just hit on the major events.

-In September we found out Claire was going to be a big sister! We find out in a few days if this baby is going to be a brother or a sister and we are really excited. Drew and I both agree, we can't wait to see Claire be a big sister. She loves babies (both real and her baby dolls) so it will be fun to see her interact with her sibling.

-Claire switched to a 'big girl' bed about 2 months ago. We started off with just her crib converted into a toddler bed, and then after about a week she got a twin size bed. She LOVES it! She is actually really excited to go to bed every night and to be able to climb into her bed. Last week we had our first difficult few days of Claire getting out of bed during nap times, but now I think we are back to her staying in bed. She has been such a champ, and really impressed us with how well the transition went.
We have since gotten Claire blankets that actually fit her bed ;)

-Her favorite tv shows are Curious George and Super Why. When I was in the middle of my terrible morning sickness, I let her watch one show every morning while I tried to keep some breakfast down, and now she is obsessed; I think I've created a monster! Every morning when we go downstairs she grabs the remote and points it at the TV and asks for either 'George' or 'Superbye'. I think she's a little miffed I will only let her watch one episode a day haha

-Claire had her first major injury, which led to her first trip to the ER last month. Two stitches later and we were out of there, but needless to say, I'm hoping to not repeat the experience any time soon.

-Claire is talking up a storm! It's crazy how each week that goes by her words continue to get clearer and she keeps adding more. Here are a few of her most used words:
Car
Outside
Dog (and the sound)
Cat (and the sound)
George
Super Why
More
Go
Please
Thank You
Water
Juice
Apple
Apple Sauce
Carseat
Ball
Monkey (and the sound)
Cow (and the sound)
Mama
Daddy
Grandma
Grandpa
Light
Bright
Cup
Milk
Baby
Animal
Remote
Phone
Teeth
Elbow
Knee
Head
Eyes
Ear
Chin
Clothes
Shoes
Socks
Night Night
Paci
No
Uh-huh
Store
Tree
Color
Chair
Jump
Run
I know there are probably even more than those, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. When she's in a good a mood, she'll repeat almost anything she hears. We're still working on stringing words together but there have a been a few times she has said "more water", or "more please", so I'm sure it will happen in no time!

-We've been on a one nap schedule since about 12 or 13 months. Claire's day typically looks like this:
Wake up around 6:45am or 7:00 am
Nap around 10 or 10:30 am and sleep about 2 hours
Bath time at 6:30 and bedtime at 7:00pm.

-Claire has 12 teeth- four on top, four on bottom, and four molars (two top and two bottom). I have a feeling we are in for more soon. cause every time I look over Claire has her hands in her mouth.

-We've hit the "do it myself stage" with Claire within the past few weeks. She wants to do everything on her own, which usually I don't mind letting her try for a while, but it has become an issue when we are trying to get something quickly. She wants to try and dress herself, and feed herself yogurt (which is quite the mess), but it's so fun to see her progress and get better at those tasks.

15 and 16 Weeks

Sentimental. After the mall shootings, which happened so close to our house, and the CT shootings, I've been feeling very emotional this week. Claire has been receiving lots of extra cuddles and kisses this week.

Big Sister Practice

We've been playing with Claire's baby dolls and practicing being gentle with them. A couple days ago I pulled the infant carseat out of Claire's closet to put it in the babies room, but of course Claire needed to check it out first. I told her to grab the baby so we could put it in the carseat. This is what she did instead.

Where is...?

We end up playing the "where is?" game a lot when we're trying to distract Claire. We finally caught her on video identifying/ naming her body parts.

Don't mind the overturned couch, we're not actually wild partiers or anything, Drew was just fixing a leg on it ;)

Thesis and 14 Weeks

Well I have no 13 week picture because we were a little busy getting ready for Drew's thesis defense. Claire and I are so proud of him! It's been a long road and a lot of work, but he did it, and it's finally over!

First stop-Daddy's office! Just helping make a few notes for his presentation

Hehe...snuck this picture while Drew was presenting!

We were super blessed that our friend Becca offered to watch Claire for us while Drew presented. There was no way I was brave enough to try and keep a 17 month old quite for a 45 minute thesis presentation!
When the thesis panel kicked us out to question Drew in private (aka the scary part), I headed over to Becca's to get Claire and hang out with all my mommy friends that I haven't been able to see in a few months. It was so fun to get all the kids together (5 kids under 2.5 and three of us are pregnant with our 2nd!).

This week has been flying by for some reason, and before I knew it, I realized it was wednesday night! I figured I better take my 14 week picture since I had made the chalkboard days ago, and now I'm almost 15 weeks. Unfortunately Drew wasn't home, so here is my sad 14 week self portrait complete with more of Claire's lovely drawings:

I've been dreaming of a slurpee; so weird! I've yet to go get one, but I think about them all the time.

Still queasy. Would someone like to remind my morning sickness it's supposed to go away after the first trimester??

An Eventful Thanksgiving

We went over to my parents house for Thanksgiving this year. It was a nice low key day, with just my parents and brother.

We ate some delicious turkey breast wrapped in prosciutto
photo 1 (2)

And lots of yummy other sides that I didn't get pictures of since I was too busy eating them :)

Our plan was for Drew and Claire to go home, and I was going to stay the night at my parents and go shopping with my mom in the morning. Drew was packing stuff up to go home, when Claire took a little tumble into the edge of the coffee table. I wasn't too panicked until I was how much blood there was, and my mom said she probably needed to go to the ER. Then all bets were off, and my raging hormones kicked in and I bawled like a baby.
Not my best parenting moment.

We jumped in the car and headed to the ER. Luckily we got there and there was no one else waiting so we were able to get Claire seen quickly. This also happened to be right at Claire's bedtime, so needless to say she was a little mad. She cried when the took her temperature, put the finger monitor on her, and shined the light on her lip. It was meltdown city.
The doctor decided she needed a couple stitches. I knew I was too emotional to be in there while they were stitching her up, so I went and finished registration while Drew stayed with Claire. He said she actually did really well, and was more mad about being held still than anything.

Poor girl, pre stitches

Needless to say, it was quite the eventful Thanksgiving, but it sure made us thankful for good doctors and medical insurance!

Claire is doing fine now, we went and had her stitches removed today (which was a whole other adventure).

11 & 12 Weeks

The last two weeks have flown by, and just like that we're close to the end of the 1st trimester!
I'm starting to feel a little better, though I did throw up my entire dinner the other night. So much for my long streak of being vomit free.

Claire's Bathroom Adventures

As a disclaimer I will say that in the moment neither of these stories were very funny to me, but within only a few hours I could look back and laugh. I knew I had to write these down so that someday when Claire's kids are being little stinkers I can say "look you did crazy things too!".

About 2 weeks ago we had our first prenatal appointment. Drew met Claire and I at the OB office and we had our routine check up. I had to get some blood work done in the lab afterwards, but Drew had to head back to work, so Claire and I stayed by ourselves. After a quick poke I thought we were ready to go home but the nurse called me back and told me I needed to leave a urine sample as well before we left. I knew this was going to be a pain, but I ushered Claire into the tiny little hospital bathroom and turned around to close the door. Then I heard what no mother wants to hear in the bathroom with a toddler...
Splashing.
In the 5 seconds it took me to turn around and close the door Claire had bee lined to the toilet and stuck both hands straight in. I turned around in horror to see Claire happily splashing away in the toilet water, with a very pleased look on her face.
Like I said before, the girl loves water.
After only mildly freaking out, and washing her hands about 17 times we were able to leave the doctors with no more 'water play'.

And if one bathroom incident wasn't enough, fast forward three days and we're back at the doctors, only this time for Claire.
Claire's urine had been smelling really strong for about a week so I called the doctor and she asked us to come in so she could make sure Claire didn't have a UTI.
I'm not really sure how I thought they were going to test her for a UTI, but in we went, and the doctor informed me she would need a urine sample.
Oh did I mention it needed to be a 'clean catch' urine sample? So none of the normal, strap-a-weird-little-bag-thing-on-her-until-she-pee's trick's would work. So our options were rather limited and the doctor said she would probably have to do a catheter to get the sample. Well Claire HATES the doctor. She freaks out getting her temperature taken, so I knew there was no way I was going to be able to hold her still enough to do a catheter, and I was too much of an emotional pregnant wreck to watch her cry like that.
I told the doctor that sometimes Claire sits on the little potty insert at home while I read her books, and she was more than willing to let us try to do it that way. The nurse led us to the bathroom and said to take as much time as we needed, and left me with the little sample cup. Well what the doctor failed to mention is that they dont have the potty seat inserts, so my option was to hold my squirming toddler over a toilet until she peed. Um, yeah right.

So what does a desperate mom do? That's right, I stripped Claire down and let her run around the little bathroom butt naked while I chased her around in case she started to pee. After about 10 minutes I was ready to give up and call it a day, when that magical moment happened, and I quickly shoved the little sample cup under Claire.
I don't think I've ever been more excited to have Claire pee in my whole life!
I wiped Claire down, stuck a diaper on and used a whole lot of paper towels and sanitizing wipes to clean the bathroom floor. I walked out to find the nurse, feeling like super mom; I had just saved my baby from a mean ol' catheter!
Now comes my shameful moment of this story.
I knew that probably wasn't the way the nurse and doctor wanted me to get the sample but I didn't care! When I walked out of the room they both were so impressed that Claire had peed on the potty, and kept telling me how smart she was, and that I could start potty training early.
Hehe oops!

In the end Claire was fine, which only reinforced my feeling of super mom status that I saved her from unnecessary tortue!

Halloween 2012

This year was Claire's first real halloween; last year she was more of a lump in a lady bug costume than anything else :) This year I found the most adorable Dorothy costume idea on pinterest. I was even able to get it finished before my morning sickness kicked in!

IMG_6621

We spent halloween with my younger siblings while the parentals were out of state. Since they live out in the country there aren't a lot of neighbors around, which makes trick or treating tricky, we ventured out to the outlet malls for the night.

Claire wasn't so sure about people sticking stuff in her basket, and kept trying to pull it all out. Her first piece of candy was a jolly rancher that she proceeded to carry in her empty hand the entire night. Seriously, she would not let that thing go.

A lot of stores were already out of candy or not participating this year, so after we collected a whooping 7 pieces of candy we decided to head to the church where Justin does boy scouts since they were doing a 'Trunk or Treat' in the parking lot.
Am I the only one who has never heard of these before?!
The members or the church come and park their cars and sit in the trunks/tailgates and hand out candy. It ended up being perfect for Claire since she didn't have to walk too far from one car to the other.

While she may not have been so sure at the beginning of the night, I think she definitely got the idea by the end. At one point I tried to take her basket since it was getting heavy; she was NOT happy about that! Heaven forbid someone take her candy!
Oh and taking the basket away to get her in her carseat? Yeah, talk about a meltdown.

I think next year she'll be even more excited :)

First Haircut

Claire's hair has been crazy for a while now, but I've been in denial about cutting it. I was clinging to the tiny bit of scraggly long hair she had! I didn't want to start all over with short hair, but alas it was looking a little mullet like and I knew it had to happen.

So off I went to the store to buy a dum-dum sucker to distract her. Well come to find out you can't buy just one (duh) so we ended up with a whole bag that I later had to hide from Claire. This was her first sucker, but she sure figured out quick how much she likes them!

5 Weeks and 9 Weeks

Yep, you read that right.
5 weeks and 9 weeks.

I wish I could say I just skipped weeks 6,7, and 8 but unfortunately I didn't. I was throwing up my guts and waiting for my body to adjust to the Zofran.

Some days are better than others, but I'm slowly starting to adjust to the medicine, and although I feel nauseous all the time, I'm able to keep food down and take care of Claire.

So here is week 5, the calm before the storm of sickness.

Pumpkin Patch

I'm only a week and half late posting these pictures, but here is proof that we did make it to the pumpkin patch!
We were running out of time before Halloween, so we ended up having to squeeze it on a Saturday that was raining. Luckily we caught a small break in the rain and it only slightly drizzled on us once. My mom was even able to meet us and enjoy the pumpkin patch too!

Of course every good trip starts with a pre pumpkin picking snack of applesauce

Children's Museum

On Thursday I was determined to get out of the house! My body has started to adjust a little more to the zofran and morning sickness, so I thought we might be safe to get out and do something fun.
We met up with my friend Aleah and her little  boy Max and went to the Portland Children's Museum.
I totally remember going when I was little and we've been there a few times in the past few years with friends and family, and I could not wait to take Claire! She is so curious and such a busy body that I knew she would love it.

Our first stop was story time, which I didn't think Claire would be too interested in, but come to find out, it was mostly just music, and Claire was ready to dance!

Then we moved on to the transportation station. Claire did not want to leave this bus! There were too many cool buttons and knobs to play with, which unfortunately led to me having to climb through a very small child size opening to get her out.

Claire loves dogs.
I mean really loves them.
If she sees a dog on the street, a commercial  or in a book she starts barking. Luckily for her there was a vet station at the museum and she was in heaven with all the stuffed dogs to pet and bark at.

Someone was hiding in the kennels!
Shampooing her dog

We saved the water station for last for obvious reasons.
This girl loves water almost as much as she loves dogs. She's been known to stick her hand in a cup of water and be perfectly entertained for a good 15 minutes.
Thankfully there were waterproof smocks because Claire splished and splashed and even dumped a full watering can of water on her face.

After she was sufficiently soaked, we were getting dangerously close to nap time (for mommy and Claire!), so we pried ourselves away and drove home. Thankfully we have a membership, so we'll be back to play again soon :)

Last camping trip

A few weekends ago we drove up to Mary Hill Campground in Washington to camp with my parents and some family friends while the boys went deer hunting. We had great weather; I don't think I've been camping where it was too hot to sleep in the sleeping bag at night!

Claire loves being outside, which means I didn't have to bother packing toys. She had to much fun playing with rocks, and chasing around the older kids.

I was busy chasing Claire and feeling ill from morning sickness, so I only managed to snap a few pictures with my phone:

Drew took this on their first morning out.

Loving the rocks! She filled cups and water bottles with them all weekend. She was one filthy little girl by the end of each day.

Playing iphone games with Lauren.
